Challenge

Borough Market, London's most historic and beloved food marketplace, needed a website that could unite its vibrant in-person culture with a compelling digital experience. The existing site didn't reflect the market's energy or diversity, nor did it support modern digital discovery, event promotion or the needs of traders and visitors.

Solution

We designed a platform that evokes the atmosphere, community and heritage of the market through rich storytelling and immersive design, while giving visitors, traders, media and event-goers clear, intuitive information. Enhanced search surfaces traders, market news, events and seasonal campaigns, and the Borough Market team can now update content, highlight new traders and manage events themselves.

Outcomes

The new site drives greater digital engagement with both local and global audiences, streamlines event promotion and trader discovery, and has lifted site visits and brand sentiment.

Features

What we built

  1. A recipe's ingredients and method, above its "Where to buy these ingredients" panel linking to Spice Mountain, Hickson & Daughter and Raya

    01

Recipes that send you to a stall

Every recipe ends with where to buy its ingredients, linked to the traders who sell them. A reader planning dinner finds the stalls to shop at.

  2. The trader directory, with Produce, Dine & Drink and Non food tabs, type and trading day filters, and a search for trader name or ingredient

    02

A directory you can search by ingredient

More than 100 traders, searchable by name or by what they sell, and filtered by type and by the days they trade. Traders who sell online are flagged on their card.

  3. Bath Soft Cheese Co's page: its story, website and shop links, opening times, its place in Three Crown Square, and an article about the farm

    03

    A page for every trader

Each trader has their own story, where to find them in the market, their hours and directions, and links to their website and online shop. Articles about them link back.

  4. The market map of Green Market, Borough Market Kitchen and Three Crown Square, above the visit page's accessibility notes

    04

Everything you need to plan a visit

This week's opening times are on every page. The visit page maps the market's three areas and spells out access in detail, from cobbles and passage widths to toilets that need no radar key.
